As many of you might already have heard, you are now allowed to change your deviantART username/account name if you are a Premium member (see
[link]). Already I have seen two people I follow change their usernames. I'm not against the practice; this is all fine and dandy for those who choose to go by a moniker that sounds more appealing/professional/mature (it'll just be damn confusing for people like me who recognize others visually rather than by name, creating a "who are you and why am I following you?" situation until we visit that person's profile).
I won't be joining this movement, however. I was lucky at the time I created my profile; I was already beginning to develop my own community persona and name, and since then have stuck with my current moniker, OrionSTARB0Y. Granted, when I first used this moniker, I was literally a "boy" in high school looking for approval by my peers and strangers online; this does not mean I want to change my moniker to something akin to "OrionSTARMAN" in hopes of displaying maturity (still working on that...). Rather, I am fond of my moniker as it is, and have no concern as to people's perception of my maturity based on it. OrionSTARB0Y is unique because it serves three purposes (or so I presume): first, it reveals part of my real name and thus demystifies my online presence; second, the latter, capital half of my moniker links my real name to its origin (the Orion Nebula/Constellation, or as most people refer to it, "You mean like Orion's Belt?"); and third, rather than using "STARMAN," which--to me, the comic geek--sounds like a campy superhero name (no offense, DC Comics), and if anything I am the sidekick to my greatest creation, the Mad Mummy (which is a very dangerous job, see
[link]). As for the random zero in STARB0Y, I have no explanation for that when I created it, but I stand by it nonetheless despite the confusion it stirs when people try to search or link me online. If I had the chance, I'd time travel back to when I first created the moniker and change the zero to a regular capital o, but alas, I have yet to crack that mystery, and I'm unable to change the name of every online account that uses OrionSTARB0Y without severe repercussions.
So there you have it. I shall not be changing my moniker anytime soon on any online account for the sake of maturity nor clarity, not because I'm an ass, but because in some cases it is impossible and I have accepted myself as OrionSTARB0Y. So go about your business now. Shoo.
